Celebrating our 40th birthday

This year the Bryanston Organic & Natural Market celebrates its 40th birthday, with the month of October filled with interesting talks, demonstrations, special offers, customer treats and children’s activities.

Each week a section of the market will be featured.   First Health & Wellness, followed by our textile stallholders, then the farmers belonging to the Bryanston Market PGS group, followed by our deli stallholders and culminating in a Spring fashion show that showcases the new season's designs.

Throughout the month our artists and crafters will be at work in the market, demonstrating their skills.   In the tea garden area we have created a memory wall reflecting the highlights of the past 40 years, alongside which is a guest book for customers to record their memories of the market.

Spot prizes will be given out at the cashier points throughout the day.   As it is better to give than to receive on our birthday, a fundraising drive is being held on behalf of Habitat for Humanity.   There is also a raffle for some beautiful items which have been donated by our stallholders, the proceeds of which will go to swell the funds raised for Habitat for Humanity.

1976 - It started with a bunch of carrots...

It was in 1976, in an effort to raise funds for Michael Mount Waldorf School, when a group of parents started bringing their organically grown fruit and vegetables from their gardens to sell to other parents.   To increase sales, they ventured out onto the pavement waving bunches of carrots at passing cars.

As a movement towards healthy eating and conscious living, the market quickly grew to include a variety of artists and crafters.  From these humble beginnings, Johannesburg’s first and finest outdoor market was born.

Two devastating fires gutted the market.   The first in 1988 and the second twenty years later in 2008, but the spirit of the market could not be vanquished and each time it arose from the ashes stronger than before.

We look forward to having you join us during the festive month of October when the market will be dressed up in its birthday finery and a good time will be had by all.   Don't miss the fun!!

With best wishes,

Glenda Moore
