Crafts Alive! - 22 to 31 March

What is Crafts Alive?
Crafts Alive is a rich pageant of creative expression, festive fun and artistic flair!!  An opportunity to showcase the amazing talent that abounds at the Bryanston Organic & Natural Market, where artists and crafters have been nurtured for the past 41 years in an holistic, supportive community environment that allows them to prosper and express their gifts. Entrance to the market to enjoy the pageant is free of charge.

When is it happening?
Crafts Alive takes place alongside the usual market activities over four market days – Thursday 22 March, Saturday 24 March, Thursday 20 March and Saturday 31 March.   As usual, the market is open from 9am to 3pm.

Do join us for a fun-filled 4-day adventure of exploring the fascinating and captivating world of arts and crafts.

What is there to see and do?

A Crafts Alive! map will facilitate your way through the market to see our crafters and artists at work in their stalls.    The artists and crafters welcome your questions and interaction on their techniques, the processes used, their choice of materials and designs, and are happy to offer handy tips for DIY enthusiasts.   Several of the crafters offer lessons outside of market trading days.

Crafters at work include stone sculpturing, jewellery making, stained glass crafting, ceramic painting, bead and wirework, woodwork, embroidery, quilting, knitting and crochet work, wool felting, shoe making, paper quilling, machine and hand crafted leatherwork, and of course, our artists at work.

Demonstrations of particular interest include Peter Mthombeni, ceramic master crafter, on his potter’s wheel, Dana Biddle of Colourspun, an authority on yarns and fibres with a bevy of demonstrations around her stall including embroidery, quilting, wool felting and a sock knitting machine, sisters Tariro and Rutendo of T&R Creations with a paper quilling exhibition and activity, Harriet van Heerden of French & Country Décor, on hand to help you with ideas and suggestions to revitalise your soft furnishings with the 2018 colour of the year, and Carla Frank with her Teddy Bear making.

Knitted Knockers will also be in the market on 22 March promoting their worthy cause of knitting natural breast prostheses for donation to the Helen Joseph Hospital Breast Clinic.

Children's Activities during Crafts Alive!

As it is school holidays, there are plenty of crafting activities to keep your children entertained while you browse the crafting displays.

These include candle making, T-shirt painting, stone carving, wood crafting & painting, wool felting, seedpod and wire bird making, paper quilling and a gemstone scratch patch.  There will also be a puppet show, “The Magic Pancake” at 11am each day, as well as Funtastic Arts & Crafts offering children the opportunity of making Easter gifts and decorations.  Activities range from R30 per child.   As always, The Toy Lady offers toddlers a toy train and doll's house play table activity free of charge.
