Out of Alex was established in 1993 as a job creation initiative and social enterprise that works with groups of township-based women to manufacture and market a range of hand-embroidered linen and decor products.
This social enterprise spans more than 24 years, and has impacted hundreds of lives in that time. Currently, many women in Alexandra and surrounding townships earn their income through the work they do for Out of Alex, many of whom are from abusive or poverty-stricken backgrounds.
The hand workers receive training, life skills and other support through the organisation, and are able to earn a living working from their homes. They are paid for each and every piece produced.
