Kraut & Krunch offers a range of raw and fermented foods made from organic or naturally-grown ingredients. Fermented foods are highly nutritious and digestible. Fermentation not only makes nutrients more bio-available but also generates additional nutrients and destroys toxins. Bacteria in our gut, enhanced by bacteria in foods, have far-reaching and profound effects on our health. Scientists claim that at least 70% of our immunity lies in the gut.
The Kraut & Krunch range of fermented foods contains live lactic acid bacteria. Most mass-produced ferments are pasteurized for shelf stability and do not contain these beneficial bacteria. Specific probiotic strains available as supplements can have powerful therapeutic effects, but may not be as beneficial as live foods containing diverse bacterial populations.
Why did you choose this type of business or craft? I believe that fermented foods are vital to our health. The latest research indicates that our microbiome affects our mood, metabolism, immunity, our perception of the world and the clarity of our thoughts, among other things. Everything about our health hinges on the state of our microbiome.
My mission is to change the world one gut at a time!
What inspires you to create and develop your product range? The possibilities in the realm of fermented foods are endless. My greatest challenge is not to overwhelm customers with too many choices! These living foods respond to so many variables, including the seasons, the characteristics of the ingredients, and the environment in which they are cultured. Each batch is unpredictable and unique.
By whom are you assisted or supported in the creation and making of the products? I am assisted by two amazing sisters, namely Sikhangele and Ntombi.
How do you assure yourself of the ethics of the suppliers of your raw materials? My suppliers are either certified organic, certified by PGS or grow their produce naturally. I participate in farm visits whenever possible.
